Fr. Władysław Węglarz (1950 - 2012)

Fr. Władysław Węglarz was born on September 22nd 1950 in Półrzeczki. From September 1964 he lived, for one year, in the community house of the Society of the Divine Savior in Kraków – Zakrzówek, in order to complete the 8th grade of his elementary education. On September 23rd 1965 he entered the Salvatorian Novitiate in Bagno, where on September 23rd 1966 he made his first religious profession.

On August 15th 1973, also in Bagno, he took his perpetual vows. On April 24th 1975 he was ordained to the Priesthood by the Most Rev. Wincenty Urban, in Bagno. Afterwards he was appointed to the religious house in Kraków at Łobzowska Street, but lived in Lublin, where he studied history at the Department of Human Sciences at the Catholic University of Lublin (KUL). On December 22nd 1980 he was transferred to the community of Trzebnica, where he was a catechist and continued his Master’s Theses under the title Ludność katolicka parafii Bagno w latach 1766-1874 (Catholics of the Bagno Parish in 1766-1874), which he defended next year, in June, receiving the Master’s Degree in history. In that period he was granted permission to begin his doctoral studies in history at the KUL. He was an active scholar and served in pastoral ministry in Trzebnica. Toward the end of July 1986 he was appointed as the manager of the Provincial Office and moved to the community house at Łobzowska Street in Kraków. Besides that he was involved in didactical field at the Salvatorian Major Seminary in Bagno, where he was a lecturer. One year later he became the superior of the community. On March 19th 1988 he joined the community of the Motherhouse in Rome, where he was a general archivist. In 1993 the Salvator Publishing House published his book entitled: Miłość doskonała w służbie Królestwu, czyli o życiu pustelniczym i zakonnym w chrześcijaństwie, wiek III-XII [Perfect charity in service of the Church. Christian hermits and religious from 3rd to 12th century]. It was a collection of his conferences presented by the Vatican Radio in 1990-1992. Next year he published another book, entitled Bazylika Świętego Piotra. Przewodnik szczegółowy [The St. Peter’s Basilica. Detailed guide]. On February 16th 1996 he arrived in the Diocese of Noto, Sicily. For more than three years he worked there at St. Corrado sanctuary. Moreover he assisted in numerous parishes in Noto and Rosolini. At the same time he studied moral theology at the theological department in Sicilia (Studio Teologico S. Paolo di Catania), where he defended his licentiate thesis entitled: Il modello ideale di prete secondo Giuseppe Vizzini vescovo di Noto (1913-1935). On June 28th 1999 Fr. Władysław returned to Poland and since then he was a provincial archivist, while residing at the community of Kraków – Zakrzówek.  A year later he began his doctoral studies at the Pontifical Theological Department in Wrocław. He also returned to work at the Salvatorian Seminary and Novitiate. He also gave lectures on the History of the Church and Society of the Divine Savior to the Salvatorian Sisters and to first lay Salvatorian community in Poland. On June 20th 2005 at the Pontifical Theological Department in Wrocław he defended his doctoral thesis, entitled: Salwatorianie w diecezji Noto na Sycylii, 1894-1927 [Salvatorians in the Diocese of Noto in Sicilia, 1894-1927], written under the supervision of Fr. professor dr hab Antoni Kiełbasa SDS. In January 2008 he began preparation of historical work on the cult of the Mother of God the Queen of the Lakes in Brasław, Belarus, which made possible the coronation with the papal crowns of the miraculous icon, on August 22nd 2009. In July 2010 at the request of the provincial superior, Fr. Władysław accepted duties of pastoral assistant at the church of the Divine Savior in Kraków – Zakrzówek.

For Father Węglarz the intellectual activity was of a great value. Not only have his academic titles confirmed this, but also his assiduity in this matter. The fruits of such attitude were his books mentioned already above, numerous historical articles, encyclopedia entries, personnel and statistical catalogues of the Province. Knowing several foreign languages he served the Society by participating in diverse commissions and as a translator at the international meetings, general visits and in many other situations. He was an open, joyful, good-natured person and a courageous thinker.
 
Fr. Władysław Węglarz died of cancer, on the morning of December 21st 2012 in Trzebnica’s hospital. His funeral took place on December 27th the same year. He was buried in the Society’s tomb in Bagno.
